Why do we outtrip?

Outtrips foster resilience and collaboration, pushing students out of their comfort zones while building deep connections through nature.

It is true that young people will rise to the challenge. They respond to a high bar, appreciating the opportunity to achieve. It is so moving when you witness their bravery and courage.

RLC’s Outtrips are critical events where students, and staff, immerse themselves in nature, demonstrating the grit and fortitude we require to succeed in life. Transferable attributes such as collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication are evident over the course of these five days. A sense of belonging, and forging meaningful, impactful relationships are the essence of this signature RLC program.

Being with the Grade 11s on the Georgian Bay sea kayaking expedition confirmed what I began on my quest 31 years ago as a young teacher out of Calgary, Alberta. Get them out of their comfort zones, into nature, and watch them thrive. The bonds and interpersonal connections form organically, and the beauty of the natural backdrop is only eclipsed by the magic of our students finding self, others, and why the natural world is vital to our wellbeing.

A powerful quote that stuck with me was when a student at the campfire on day two said, “Today, when we were paddling far out in the bay, I saw the apex of the horizon bend as if there was nothing but blue and limitless distance.” I see a poet in this young person.

Another student said to me as the sun was setting over Georgian Bay on our final night, “Look what we are doing as a school. Why doesn’t everybody get to do this?”

I cannot wait to witness the learning journey that will follow from this oustanding start to our year, comforted by the partnership we have in guiding our students and school.
